Egyptian Ministry of Transport and Egyptian National Railways (GER) signed a letter of intent with GE Transportation to acquire 100 ES30ACi Light Evolution diesel locomotives worth $ 575 million.
In a statement, Transport Minister Mr Hisham Arafat said delivery of an initial batch of 25 of the 2.39MW locomotives will take place next year. The deal also includes a 15-year parts and technical support package for both the new locomotives and GE motive power ENR’s current fleet.
GE will provide training for 275 ENR employees as part of the contract.
On June 19, ENR and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a loan agreement of 290 million Euros to finance orders. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will also provide technical support for ENR to develop and implement a cargo reform program with the aim of increasing rail freight to 25 million tonnes by 2022.
