Dutch food safety authority recalls milloin of kilos of beef

THE NETHERLANDS The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority NVWA is recalling millions of kilos of beef from all over Europe because it could be contaminated with horse meat, but much of it will already have been consumed Slaughter Equipment.
There was no evidence that the meat was a threat to human health, the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority said.
The meat was distributed to 132 companies in the Netherlands and some 370 more around Europe between January 1, 2011 and January 15 this year.
Some 132 Dutch meat processors, customers of the companies Wiljo Import and Export BV and Vleesgroothandel Willy Selten BV, have been informed by letter they have two weeks to trace all consignments of meat, which could add up to some 50 million kilos.
Inspectors examining the records of the Dutch trading companies found that the origin of the supplied meat was unclear. As a result it was not possible to confirm whether slaughterhouses had respected procedures Slaughter Equipment

The NVWA has also implemented European regulations to alert other EU countries of the possible contamination, in particular Germany, France and Spain.
