Switchgear is defined as an electrical equipment or group of electrical equipments which is used to switch a circuit ON or OFF. It's used to switch electrical lineups for various electrical configurations or isolate electrical equipment. In the US, it's mostly 480v equipment but will also be 4160v.
A switchyard is a section of a substation where transmission or distribution lines are fed, which may contain switchgear, standalone, transfer switches, reclosers, etc. It is generally a fenced off area with high voltage transformers and gas operated high voltage breakers which is used to distribute power from a power plant to the grid or from the grid to back-end power into the plant. It mostly is dealing with higher voltages. Switch yard is a dedicated place in a power plant where the power is received from the generator and redistributed to the electric grid. It contains lot of electrical equipments such as transformers, isolators, circuit breakers, current transformers, potential transformer, lightening arrestors etc.
